I ran a 5K in DC this morning, and stumbled across this little gem of an A3, rocking Virginia plates. The first year for these cars was 1996, so I’m wondering how the owner got it registered here. The import law is still 25 years, right? Anyway, I’d never seen one before!

Then it would have Diplomat plates.

Probably registered it as a Golf.

That’s really cool. It’s like a fancy 323 or something

whoever owns it was running with you, since the car doesn’t run :p
The 25-year ban only applies to
running
cars, and I guess the feds know that Audis suck and rarely move under their own power, so they’re not really cars and thus not subject to the ban.

USMC tags, is there some special exemption for service members to bring cars home?

There used to be but according to the NHTSA when I e-mailed them last year.
The rule now is the 25 year rule for everyone.
In the past, military personnel were allowed to import one vehicle that they owned while serving overseas and were being re-stationed back home.

This one’s possibly old enough that it was imported prior to the rule change.

Ye’, the NHTSA aren’t a very helpful or talkative bunch and never gave an end date but I imagine it can’t of been too long ago while also not being too recent.

Canada car? Either 15 year or did they get brought into Canada but not the US under ECE regulations like a number of other oddball cars for Canada?

This is basically a nice mk4 Golf. A German made mk4 Golf. They had their faults, but unreliable they were not. Especially with the 1.9 TDI. 400k miles isn’t all that uncommon.

Imported from Canada? I often see a gasoline Mercedes B-Class near where I live. It has a license plate that says Canada
